Seen on DVD, on my HUGE screen (20") on Tuesday March 4. No Slithy Toads

I didn't quite know what to do with this when it had its theatrical release. I like Brad Pitt, it was very serious minded, it certainly seemed Worthy of Being Seen. But it was a long movie. The reviews were all over the map from "there be dragons" to you must must must see it. I ended up not seeing it in the theatres, but I felt guilty about it in a way I very rarely and hardly ever do. So I did something I do hardly ever, and I promised myself I'd look at the DVD. Thank you, Queens Borough Public Library.

And I am SO glad I didn't pay for this in the theatre. To be sure, you never know how something might play differently in a big theatre vs. a TV at home; there are movies I've loved more than I should have because I saw them at the Loews Astor Plaza. But I can't see this as one of them. Nothing happens. Lots of pretty scenery to look at. But NOTHING HAPPENS. I decided I'd rather be working out at the gym than watching a movie from the comfort of my recliner. That is not a recommendation.

    Are you crazy!? This movie was amazing, visually and otherwise.

    I am so sorry that there wasn't an explosion every ten minutes to help keep you entertained.

Oscars Live Blog 2024

2:22 AM Oppenheimer.  And I am going to cut out pretty quickly because it almost 2:30 in the morning, and I have to get some sleep, and be at Hachette HQ for my first meeting of London Book Fair week in not much more than eight hours.  This winner is deserving enough.  I did see it twice. I didn’t like it more the second time, but I liked it well enough. 2:13 AM This was a tough category to predict, but no complaints about Emma Stone who gives a fearless performance that is sui generis in Poor Things. Borders, Post-Mortem

At this point, it's hard to see that Borders isn't on the verge of a bankruptcy filing, the best case scenario would be a Chapter 11 that would reorganize into a much smaller company that might have a go if focusing on stores that actually make money, but even that, I can't be real optimistic because same store sales are dropping so fast that a store which makes money today might not in two years. Though we live in a country that does allow companies to spend lots of time going bankrupt and doing it on multiple occasions, witness the airline industry. So what happened? OK, mid 1980s, Borders is one of the best stores around and starting to spread out in Michigan a little and lend out its inventory system. It's a good system. It lets stock sell down, then reorders.
